There are likewise valves between the auricles and ventricles, which permit the blood to flow from the former into the latter, but prevent its return into the auricles.

The different cavities of the heart do not contract at the same time; but the two auricles contract together, the ventricles being at that time in a state of relaxation; these ventricles then contract together, while the auricles become relaxed.

With this view, I surrounded with tin-foil the parvagum and intercostal nerves of several cows and sheep, while the auricles of their hearts were still contracting, and placed one end of a bent silver rod, at one time upon the heart itself, at another upon adjacent muscles, 70 and sometimes upon the nerves; but all without producing the slightest perceptible variations, in the contractions of the heart, or a renewal of them when they had ceased.

Attached to these fibrous rings are the movable partitions or valves, between the auricles and the ventricles, the one on the right side of the heart being called the tricuspid valve, and the one on the left side the mitral valve.

The valves are so arranged that they present no obstacle to the free flow of blood from the auricles into the ventricles, but if any is forced the other way, it gets between the valve and the wall of the heart, and drives the valve backwards and upwards, thus forming a transverse partition between the auricle and ventricle, through which no fluid can pass.

The Veins are the vessels through which the venous blood returns to the auricles of the heart.
